Where the Iron Comes From
Iron is a naturally occurring mineral in Florida's soil and rock formations. As groundwater percolates through the earth and into the Floridan Aquifer, it dissolves iron along the way. Two Types of Iron — and Why It Matters

Ferric Iron (Particulate Iron)
Ferric iron has already oxidized and exists as tiny suspended particles in the water, giving it a rusty, cloudy, or orange-tinted appearance when you draw a glass. Particulate iron is less common but more immediately visible and typically easier to filter out mechanically.
What Iron Does to Your Home Over Time
The staining is the most obvious problem, but iron causes damage beyond cosmetics. Iron deposits build up inside water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines over time, contributing to scale-like buildup that reduces efficiency and shortens appliance life. Iron can also foul the resin in a traditional water softener if the iron level is high enough — gradually reducing the softener's effectiveness without any obvious external sign.
In laundry, iron is particularly harsh. White fabrics can develop permanent brownish staining that does not wash out with standard detergents. Many homeowners in iron-affected areas unknowingly ruin linens and clothing over time before identifying the water as the source.
What Actually Removes Iron From Florida Water
